Guwahati: After a returnee from Ajmer in Rajasthan tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam on Wednesday, four more people travelling on the same bus with him were also found to be infected with the novel coronavirus on Thursday.
This takes the total number of positive cases in Assam to 49, with 14 active cases, 34 discharged and one fatality.
Informing about the new cases, Himanta Biswa Sarma in Twitter wrote, “Alert ~ 4 persons, who took the same bus from Rajasthan in which the Cachar dist #COVID19 + person travelled, have tested positive too.
Total #COVID19 patients in Assam now stands at 49.”
The primary contact, Faridul Islam, stranded in Ajmer, Rajasthan, a red zone, returned to Assam on Wednesday. He along with 41 co-passenger in the bus were medically screened.
Minister Sarma during a press meet on Thursday informed that all the travellers were sent for home quarantine, however, doctors had a suspicion about Islam, hence they tested him for COVID-19 at Silchar Medical College for which he tested positive.
Following this, several places were declared as precautionary containment zones by the district magistrate of Cachar.
Further, after this case, the state health minister made it mandatory that all people coming from red zones will be put in institutional quarantine for at least three days, and tested and only then allowed for home quarantine.
