Neighbourhood classes would begin with a ratio of five students to every teacher by maintaining the social distancing

Agartala: Tripura government has decided to start “neighbourhood classes” where one teacher would teach a maximum of five students in their vicinity by maintaining social distancing until the schools reopen. This is to ensure that no student is left behind. This is in addition to online and television classes during the lockdown.

Tripura education minister, Ratan Lal Nath says, “We are not sure when the classes will resume but we have informed the Union minister for human resource development that we are ready to resume classes whenever instructions are given. We are preparing to start ‘neighbourhood classes’ soon,”

The education department appealed to teachers for this initiative and the majority of them are said to have responded positively. Tripura has around 29 thousand teachers. An internal assessment is being done to ensure proper implementation of the plan.

The government of Assam government is also looking at implementing a similar plan. This is to reach out to students who do not have access to the internet or television.

“The annual examinations for class III to VIII and IX, XI is over and evaluation of papers is complete. The department has uploaded 80 per cent of the results is done. The evaluation of Madhyamik (10th) and Higher Secondary (12th) board examinations is on in 13 centres in Agartala,” Nath added.

The state government has sought an additional fund of Rs 13 crores from the centre under the mid-day meal scheme. The schools have been providing dry ration to children along with an additional egg per child in the diet.

“The government has also asked to release Rs 36 crore funds pending which was allotted to Tripura under ‘Samagra Sikha Abhiyan’ in the past years. A fund of Rs 9.89 crore for Madrasa (SPQEM) scheme to provide quality education in schools as soon as the schools resume,” Nath said.

The state government has started broadcasting pre-recorded classes through 13 local cable channels. The government has applied for two hours slot to the Prasar Bharati for transmission of classes on Doordarshan. The classes are also made available online through the Siksha Bandhu YouTube channel of the state government.
