Justice Biswanath Somadder being formally sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC on Monday

Shillong: With several questions being raised on the urgency of the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court (HC), Justice Biswanath Somadder, who had travelled by road to reach Shillong on Sunday, will have to undergo self-isolation or home quarantine as per the protocols amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Justice Somadder was formally sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC on Monday. He was administered oath of office by Meghalaya governor Tathagata Roy.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that Justice Somadder along with nine of his family members will have to undergo self-isolation or home quarantine as per protocols.

“I want to make it very clear that any person who holds whichever position would have to abide by the protocols. He (Chief Justice) and nine of his family members who accompanied him to attend the swearing-in-ceremony are under self-isolation or home quarantine,” said Tynsong.

He added that the newly appointed Chief Justice is fully aware of the situation and also registered themselves when entering the state. “The people should not have any kind of fear or doubts. Everyone who entered the state will have to abide by the protocols laid down by the government,” said Tynsong.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya chief secretary MS Rao in a notification informed that the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court has been appointed as the patron-in-chief of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority with immediate effect.
