Agartala: With the number of novel coronavirus aka COVID-19 increasing in the bordering districts of Bangladesh, the Tripura government has decided to deploy the elite Tripura State Rifles (TSR) troops as a second line of defence to ensure high vigil along the borders.

Speaking with reporters, the acting director-general of Tripura police (ADG) Rajiv Singh said that TSR troops will be deployed in the areas along India-Bangladesh border as a second line of defence.

“The deployment would be done in the unfenced area in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF). There are some areas that are yet to be fenced and therefore there are chances of people entering illegally. The TSR troops will act as a second layer after the BSF as the first line of control,” Singh said.

The decision to deploy TSR troops in addition to BSF along the border came following the outbreak of novel coronavirus in some Bangladesh districts close to Tripura.

Tripura shares 856-km international border with neighbouring Bangladesh and BSF troops have been deployed around the state to keep a close vigil over the people of the state.

“Most of the unfenced area falls under Sepahijala district since the border falls over a number of houses with a large population. With the deployment of the TSR, the chances of infiltration will further reduce,” Singh added.

Meanwhile, the BSF public relations officer said that since the numbers of cases is increasing and Tripura is one of the coronavirus-free states now, security has been intensified along the international border. “In a recent meeting between the BSF and Tripura police, the decision to deploy TSR as the second line of defence was taken,” the PRO said.

In the recent past, a number of cases of illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals was reported from Dhalai district. However, no new instance has been reported in the state since the outbreak of novel coronavirus.
