Guwahati: Assam peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi was again sent to jail by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati on Thursday.
Urging the people of Assam, Gogoi, while addressing mediapersons outside the NIA court, appealed the people of the state to maintain social distance and follow all required norms to tackle COVID-19.
He also demanded the state government to help 4-5 lakh people of the state, especially youth, who are stranded outside Assam due to the disease to return back to their respective native places.
Gogoi was brought to Guwahati from Dibrugarh jail on Wednesday. He was arrested by Dibrugarh Police on April 1 under Case no 289/19 registered against him at Chabua police station.
Apart from Gogoi, the NIA court also sent two other KMSS leaders — Dhorjya Konwor and Bitu Sonowal — to Guwahati jail on Thursday.
Earlier, some of the leading citizens of the state, including Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, former Assam DGP Harekrishna Deka, leading journalists, artists, educationists, and others, met chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and urged him to release the peasant leader following the Supreme Court’s directives to stop the spread of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
The delegation also submitted a memorandum to the state government. Gogoi was granted bail by a special NIA court but re-arrested over other cases across the state.
