Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh laying floral wreath at Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal district on Thursday 

Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday paid tribute and laid floral wreaths to the fallen heroes who fought valiantly in the great Anglo-Manipuri War in 1891 at the Khongjom War Memorial, Khebaching in Thoubal district.

However, unlike the previous years, the state observed the day in a low-key celebration with a small group of delegates due to the ongoing lockdown over COVID-19 pandemic.

Owing to the fast spread of the virus, Thoubal district administration had made sure that social distancing was maintained devoid of large gathering to contain COVID-19 infection.

In a message to the citizens, chief minister N Biren Singh said that Khongjom Day has immense significance for the people of Manipur. “This day reminds us of the courage of our forefathers who made selfless sacrifice to uphold the freedom of our motherland,” CM Singh said.

On the solemn occasion, Singh had also urged the people of Manipur not to panic but prepared and fight bravely against COVID-19 pandemic.

Let us pledge ourselves to be equally brave and resurgent in facing the challenges posed by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

Governor Najma Heptulla, in her message to the people, said, “The indomitable spirit and courage shown by our forefathers in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, we must renew our vow to preserve and defend the sovereignty of our nation and prepare to face any challenge any challenges that might come on our way. Let us forget our differences and re-dedicate ourselves to the task of nation building.”

The state observation was attended by TAH & fishery minister N Kayisii, CAF &PD minister Karam Shyam, health minister Jayantakumar Singh, MLA P Brojen, MLA Y Surchandra, chief secretary J Suresh Babu, DGP LM Khaute and other state officials.

Khongjom Day is annually observed on April 23 as a state event to commemorate and pay tribute to the war heroes of Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891.
