Imphal: Ngangom Dingko Singh, a former Indian boxer and Asian Games gold medalist from Manipur, is finally said to be travelling by a special SpiceJet air ambulance to Delhi for liver cancer treatment on April 25, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said.
As per reports, Dingko’s health condition deteriorated after he was forced to miss the scheduled radiation therapy session at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in the national capital due to lockdown over COVID-19 pandemic.
The 41-year-old former ace Indian boxer, who is battling a relapse for liver cancer since earlier this year, had undergone complete course of chemotherapy three years ago. He was scheduled to get the radiation therapy in Delhi two weeks ago but he couldn’t make it with flight services coming to a standstill due to the ongoing lockdown, reports said.
“He has been contacted and arrangements have been made for him to be brought to Delhi on air ambulance to continue his radiation therapy,” BFI executive director RK Sacheti was quoted as saying by media reports.
Earlier, after knowing the situation faced by the former pugilist, Union minister of state for sports and youth affairs Kiren Rijiju had requested Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh to reach out to the boxer and extend all possible help for his treatment at the earliest.
Since Manipur lacks radiation therapy facilities, the only option available before the BFI intervened was to travel by road to either Guwahati or Kolkata crossing. However, owing to doctors in Delhi knowing his illness history, the Arjuna and Padma Shri awardee preferred to go back to the national capital to resume treatment, reports said.
In 1998, following his win at the Asian Games in Bangkok in the 54 kg bantamweight category, Dingko was awarded an Arjuna Award. In 2013, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award.
