Amid COVID-19 lockdown, Naga youths aid orphans, senior citizens

Kohima: Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the district administrations and several NGOs from the state have been helping the stranded students and labourers, dail-wage earners and those who are affected due to the nationwide lockdown.

In such a noble gesture, the Northern Angami Youth Organization (NAYO) reached out to the orphans and the senior citizens housed in shelter homes of Kohima in Nagaland and distributed essential commodities.

Led by its president Roko Angami, the tribal youth body visited the Kohima orphanage and destitute home, old age home at Meriema, and the Bright Morning star children home in Kohima on Tuesday and distributed essential commodities including rice, dal, cooking oil and potatoes.

Speaking with EastMojo, Angami humbly said that this little act was just to show that all are together in the fight against COVID-19. He said that during this time when all Nagas are extending help and supporting one another, the team also felt the need to reach out to the orphans and the old age persons who are sheltered in the respective designated homes.

He added that during this lockdown when the people are obliged to maintain social distancing, the youth body decided to donate and deliver essential goods to these shelter homes. If there are more shelter homes, the team will not be hesitant to reach out to them, he further added.

Meanwhile, through a press note, the NAYO appealed all residents to engage in social media responsibly and not to misuse the platforms. It encouraged all its affiliated village bodies to set up a COVID-19 task force or a surveillance team to monitor if any person shows signs of COVID-19 symptoms and to further sensitise the locals about the governmental orders. It also appealed all members to also look into the welfare of the needy.

Further, the tribal youth body saluted the efforts made by the frontline warriors and all the various organisations who are engaged in selfless services during these times. It also appealed the government to allow hardware stores, garages and tyre workshops to open at least once a day to cater to people’s needs. It suggested that groceries and other basic household essential stores to be opened on all working days at specified times to avoid unnecessary hoarding.
