Agartala: Four days after what started as a clash between locals and two security personnel of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) of Mizoram police, the Tripura police have deployed huge security personnel near Kawnpui village in North Tripura district to avert an ethnic clash.
Reportedly, two security guards of Mizoram’s IRBn were assaulted by a mob on Saturday after some of the women accused the security men of misbehaving with them.
A case was filed in Phaileng police station in Mizoram’s Mamit district against three persons who were later arrested on Sunday by Tripura police.
“Three persons — Santilal Chakma, Bimal Chakma and Mohanlal Chakma — were arrested and taken for a medical test but Santilal managed to flee from the hospital. However, the local court rejected the transit remand to the Mizoram police after they failed to submit the case diary,” police sources said.
On Monday night, the house of a Chakma community member was set on fire by a group of miscreants in Kawnpui village following which the locals alleged that it was torched by people of Mizoram.
A case has been registered in this matter and investigation to ascertain the reason behind the incident is being conducted by the Kanchanpur sub-divisional police officer.
On Tuesday, huge deployment of security forces was made by the Tripura police in the village and adjoining areas to ensure no untoward incident takes place in the area.
“Tension is prevailing in the village after the incident. We have deployed additional force in the Kawnpui and its adjacent villages. So far, everything is peaceful,” a police official said.
Earlier on Monday, a number of villagers fled from their houses and took shelter in the jungles after some miscreants torched the house of a Chakma community member.
