Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday informed that 50 samples collected from the primary contact list of the state’s first COVID-19 patient, who died early on Wednesday, have tested negative at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital in Guwahati, Assam.
Taking to Twitter, chief minister Conrad K Sangma announced the development on Wednesday.
The results of 43 other samples which have been sent to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta, Assam are awaited.
In a statement, health and family welfare secretary Sampath Kumar said that the Department received information from Gauhati Medical College & Hospital at 3.30 pm on Wednesday that the 50 samples that were sent on April 14 have tested negative for COVID-19.
The government is awaiting the results of 43 other samples, added Kumar.
Earlier, after the detection of the first case in the state capital on Monday, 185 samples were collected. Out of those, 161 are from East Khasi Hills and 24 from Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi district.
Six cases were earlier reported to be positive, which were of the family members of the doctor who passed away in the early hours of Wednesday.
The six positive cases were samples tested from the first batch of 68 sent on Tuesday.
“The number of samples tested positive from the first batch of 68 is as follows: six positive and six others have been sent for reconfirmation. The profiles of the positive cases are three female, two male and one child,” said Kumar.
The results of the other samples are awaited from NEIGHRIMS and Barpeta medical college. Some of the samples had to be sent to Guwahati and Barpeta due to the urgency of the matter and the limited capacity of the testing facility at NEIGHRIMS in Shillong.
All the samples taken on Tuesday were from from the medical staff and in-patients of Bethany Hospital, Shillong
