Guwahati: Assam minister of health and family welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the COVID-19 patient from Dimapur — the first positive case of the deadly virus in Nagaland — has been admitted to the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati and is undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Sarma was speaking at a press briefing in Guwahati on Monday afternoon.
The minister mentioned that the patient was not under ventilator support and has been kept at the ICU only because has been showing symptoms for coronavirus for several days. The ambulance driver and his father who accompanied him to Guwahati have also been kept under quarantine at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in the city as a precautionary measure, Sarma added.
As per the minister, the patient — a 33-year-old man — had travelled from Kolkata to Dimapur on March 24. He sought the help of two doctors over his illness and even underwent a blood test, but not a COVID-19 test.
He was eventually admitted to Zion Hospital in Dimapur on April 8 and was discharged on April 10. However, he got himself admitted to Zion Hospital again on April 11. It was then that the doctors referred him to GMCH in Guwahati, Sarma said.
“He was then brought straight away to the GMCH in an ambulance run by Eden Hospital. We collected his sample at 8 am in GMCH on April 12 and by evening, after the tests confirmed the presence of COVID-19, we declared him to be a positive case of coronavirus,” Sarma added.
In an official release issued on Monday morning, the Nagaland government mentioned that the patient had a travel history to Kolkata and also added that the patient entered Nagaland on March 24 via an Air India flight. The press release also said: “After his arrival to Dimapur on March 24 till April 12, his mobile footprint was tracked and all the time he was home quarantined except visiting/ admitting to hospitals.”
