Imphal: A 23-year-old girl from Manipur’s Churachandpur district who recently returned from China and tested negative for COVID-19, has been booked for illegally entering the state amid the national lockdown.
As per the police, a case has also been filed against her family members for helping the girl to illegally sneaked into the state, at a time when public movement has been restricted across all districts of the state, including border areas, over the coronavirus pandemic.
A case has been registered against the girl and her family under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and IPC at Singhat police station in Churachandpur.
According to sources, the girl, a resident of Singhat, started her road journey from China on February 28 and reached Manipur via Myanmar on April 6 after travelling for more than a month.
The girl tried to enter Manipur from Moreh in Tengnoupal district. However, upon finding the entry gate closed, she took a detour and illegally entered the state from Behiang in Churachandpur district after a couple of attempts given the heavy security at the border gate, the sources said.
However, till the time of filing of this report, it remained unclear how the girl travelled by road for over a month.
Speaking with EastMojo on Thursday, a police officer said that investigation has already begun. However, since the girl has been kept under quarantine at Churachandpur, a detailed investigation will take place after she completes her 14 days’ quarantine period.
Since early March this year, the Manipur government announced closure of all crossing points with neighbouring Myanmar and prohibited movement of people across the international border amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
In total, Manipur shares 398-km-long border with neighbouring Myanmar. Any unchecked crossing through the border gates poses a huge threat to the people of the Manipur at a time when the government is taking all possible steps to keep the people safe from coronavirus.
