Meghalaya kid donates piggy bank savings to fight against COVID-19

Shillong: Kids are the epitome of innocence and there is so much to learn from them every day. In such difficult times too, they manage to shower us with their love and help. And the best part is, they do not expect anything in return.

The sweet gesture of a five-year-old boy, L Mayan Nongbri, from Shillong has left everyone with a smile on their face. On Tuesday, Mayan donated his piggy bank savings of Rs 1,501 towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to help the state in its battle against COVID-19.

A kindergarten student and also a cyclist, Mayan had previously also donated his piggy bank savings to the Chief Minister’s Flood Relief Fund. Mayan has been collecting since last year, after the first donation.

Holding the receipt in hands, Mayan said, “I donated my piggy bank savings to Conrad Sangma [Meghalaya CM] and received this [pointing towards the receipt].”

When asked how Mayan began this sweet gesture, his father said, “A local newspaper had published a photo of a boy helping his mother in a stone quarry. Mayan, who has a habit of flipping through the newspapers, noticed this and asked about the picture. We informed him of the cause and the consequences that COVID-19 has affected the poor people. This inspired him to donate his savings for the poor.”

He also added that Mayan’s mother has always been encouraging him to share whatever he has — be it toys, sweets, and even food.

Mayan’s father added that the donation also had contributions from two other women who were inspired by his thought.

Meanwhile, chief minister Conrad K Sangma lauded Mayan for his sweet gesture and tweeted, “Mayan donated Rs. 1501/- out of his piggy bank towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for #Covid_19. This is little Mayan’s second contribution to the Relief Fund since last year. A small boy with a big heart! Thank you Mayan.”
