Imphal: In an effort to reach out to the people in distress and those in need of support due to the nationwide lockdown over COVID-19 pandemic, Manipur unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday distributed essential commodities among HIV-positive persons, especially women living at Christian Network of Positive Women at Mantripukhri in state capital Imphal.

The packages comprising of five bags of rice and a bag of dal were distributed to around 30 women beneficiaries, following the lockdown due to COVID-19 in the country.

According to the Indigenous Foundation (TIG), an organisation mostly engaged with the well-being of the weaker sections of society, most women living in the centre hail from Ukhrul district.

TIG also extended its gratitude and appreciation to the BJP state unit in rendering the service to the needy people.

As per TIG, there are thousands of ostracised HIV-positive persons without family and community support across the districts in the state. Many of them are struggling for two square meals a day and other basic needs even during normal times, it said.

As per data collected by the Christian Network of Positive Women in Imphal, there are a total of 842 distressed women living with HIV in the state. Ukhrul district has the highest number of such women with 294 cases, followed by Churachandpur and Chandel with 170 and 107, respectively.

Senapati has 84, Imphal East 60, Imphal West 51, Tamenglong 37, Bishnupur 22 and Thoubal has 17 such women.
