Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday expressed that the ongoing nationwide lockdown for 21 days in view of COVID-19 outbreak must be extended for another 10 to 15 days, given the current health crisis in India.
At present, the total COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 5,000-mark, including two in Manipur, with the death toll standing at 149.
Looking at the current COVID-19 scenario in the country, Singh felt that extension of lockdown in the state and the country is apt in order to curb the fast spreading of the infectious disease across states.
“We want to continue this lockdown announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for more days because of the increasing number of affected people with COVID-19 in other parts of the country,” the CM said while speaking to a television channel via video conference.
“I want to request to the PM Modi to extend the nationwide lockdown for another 10 to 15 days so that we can curb this virus,” he added.
However, Singh also pointed out the issues being faced by the citizens stranded in various metro cities due to lockdown over coronavirus outbreak. “Our main worry is that many people from the state staying outside in various cities are stranded and we want to bring them back home immediately,” he said.
As per reports, the chief minister had already put forward the problems before the ministry of civil aviation requesting the airways service to relax for one or two days so that those stranded people from the state could reach home safely.
Singh had also assured that his government is well prepared to tackle the COVID-19 issue if the health crisis ever arises. “We are prepared to tackle the COVID-19 situation and we have enough medical stocks for now,” he added.
In the last 15 days, Manipur has received medical equipment, including PPE, sanitisers, gloves and mask, etc, from the health ministry through five air cargo flights. The equipment have been distributed to each district hospital in the state as per their demands and requirements.
Moreover, the health department on Tuesday installed 10 new ventilators at RIMS Hospital, an addition to the existing ventilators.
