Kohima: As India continues to battle the spread of the deadly coronavirus, 5-year-old Megovizo Rino from Jotsoma village of Nagaland is being lauded for his noble deed of donating his entire piggy bank savings to the Kohima district administration for COVID-19 relief on Wednesday.
Joining the fight against COVID-19, Rino donated Rs 3,150 which he saved to buy a battery bike. He handed it to the district ADC and revenue officer in the presence of his father and other state officials at Kohima local ground.
Speaking with EastMojo, his father Rokophrezo Rocus Rino recalled how the little boy decided to give up his savings. “As a member of the Angami Youth Organization (AYO), I and my colleagues have been volunteering to help the district administration in distributing ration to the stranded students. So, when I returned home late after work, my son asked me why I was late. I told him that I was volunteering to help those who are affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. That is when he expressed his desire to help those in need,” said Rocus.
Rocus said that he was taken by surprise when his son decided to donate the money from his piggy bank that he has been saving for over three years to purchase a kid’s battery bike. He said that Rino has been saving the money that he received from well-wishers during his birthdays and other occasions.
Expressing his contentment, Rocus said that he was touched and filled with joy when his boy proposed the idea. “As a mature person myself, I haven’t thought about doing what he wanted to do, so I feel really good and happy for him,” he added.
A kindergarten student of St Andrew School, Jotsoma, Rino has joined the force to help those affected by the nationwide lockdown.
Meanwhile, the district administration has been providing relief to migrant labourers, daily wage workers and stranded students across the district. As the district officials relentlessly engage in providing essential needs to those affected by the lockdown, Rino’s kind gesture gives hope to those working for the societal welfare at this crucial time of a global health crisis.
Earlier, Hotel Vivor in Kohima also provided packed lunches to staffers of the district administration Kohima and DDMA, in an effort to appreciate those involved in engaging relief activities.
