Alaka Debnath stitching double-layered cotton face masks to be distributed among the frontline workers amid the coronavirus pandemic in Tripura

Agartala: Alaka Debnath is working round-the-clock to make face masks for the frontline workers of Tripura amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Debnath, the secretary of Khumpui self-help group (SHG), is not alone. Her SHG is just one of the seven SHGs with over 100 members that have received the order of preparing 10,000 double-layered cotton face masks from Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) commissioner Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav, which would be later distributed among the frontline workers, including health professionals, police personnel and other departments.

Another woman, Anjana Sinha, secretary of ‘Ekata-SHG’, said that they have 15 members in the group and five of them are working day and night to prepare the face masks.

“We have received the order from the AMC commissioner Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav and we were told to present a sample in the meeting. After showing a piece of the mask, we received the order for making these face masks for AMC,” Sinha said.

She also said that these masks have been approved by the AMC with specific criteria of having 100% cotton clothes with eight inches’ length, nine inches’ width which can be folded in three parts having a double layer of cotton material.

Earlier, the AMC commissioner had said that the AMC has decided to make 10,000 double-layered cotton face masks following guidelines of the government of India with the help of SHG members.

“At present, there are seven SHGs making these masks. The corporation will pay Rs 10 for each mask as a stitching cost. The authority is trying to increase the number of these groups to 10. After preparation, the masks will be distributed to frontline workers of AMC, police & health departments,” Yadav said.
