Ukhrul: In a time of fear and hunger amid the national lockdown imposed to battle the deadly coronavirus pandemic, people from all corners are contributing their bit to help each other.
One such example was set by two villages of Manipur where people came forward to express solidarity amid these trying times.
In the first instance, villagers of Khangkhui Khullen, situated around 90 km from state capital Imphal, have set an exemplary gesture by sharing a portion of their rice distributed to them through the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
The village, which has around 140 households, received 36 bags of rice from the state government as relief measures and continued supply of essential commodities. After distributing 5 kg each to 336 villagers, the village authority returned two bags of the remaining rice to the district administration rather than distributing among themselves.
“We could have shared the rice among the villagers but despite the quantity of remaining rice being comparatively less, we decided to give it back to the authorities with a thought that every amount of contribution matters in these struggling times,” Ringphapam Kasar, a village youth secretary, said.
In another heart-warming example, villagers of Halang village collected fresh vegetables from their respective farms and kitchen gardens and distributed them to their fellow villagers in the district headquarters of Ukhrul.
As per locals, a truckload of vegetables, including banana trees and other wild vegetables, were delivered to the people who could not return to their respective villages due to the lockdown and have been living in Ukhrul.
“It’s our self-centeredness and selfish nature that once stole the beauty of humanity. But today, the so-called deadly coronavirus virus is bringing us back together. Let us welcome it and continue to live on it,” one of the locals said.
Simple yet critical, such steps taken at each level is a crucial measure to battle COVID-19. Such examples certainly set the spirits high during testing times.
