Agartala: With the number of coronavirus cases increasing in the country amid the 21-day national lockdown, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb has made an appeal to businessmen, owners of brick kilns and tea gardens and government employees to donate food and other essential commodities to the underprivileged people.
Addressing the people on Sunday, Deb said that the government is making all efforts to provide essential commodities to all the people in need and in ensuring the safety of all from the spread of coronavirus aka COVID-19.
Deb said that those who can afford to donate for the under-privileged people across the state must come forward at this hour of need for the people confined indoors during the lockdown.
“I appeal the owners of the tea gardens, brick kilns, businessmen, traders and government employees to help the people by donating food since ‘annadaan’ is a holy work that one can do,” Deb appealed.
Speaking further, he said that the government will keep surveillance over the brick kiln owners and other businessmen so that whenever they need help from the government, the administration can help them during their need.
In Tripura, there are 52 functional tea gardens at present and the chief minister has asked the owners of the tea estates to provide rice, pulses and other essential commodities for the livelihood of workers.
Earlier, the state government had also announced to provide free ration of 15 days to 5.86 lakh families of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and priority beneficiaries. Up to 18 kg of rice and dal to 2.66 lakh primary students per family and 25 kg of rice and dal to 1.65 lakh upper primary students who are receiving mid-day meals at present will also be provided.
“We have decided to provide two months’ social pension, including April and May, to 4 lakh people, for which Rs 72 crore has been sanctioned,” law minister Ratan Lal Nath said.
