Shillong: Meghalaya top cop, Director General of Police, R Chandranathan has appealed to the citizens of the state to cooperate with the district administration in creating awareness and implementing the norms related to social distancing and hand hygiene in the fight against COVID-19.
The DGP said that while the 21day nationwide lockdown is being implemented strictly, the administration will ensure that emergency requirements of the people are met.
“The state government has imposed curfew with a view that home quarantine and social distancing are the best method to check the spread of Covid-19. However, the state government is keeping in view the citizens’ requirements relating to essential goods and emergency services. We have undertaken a slew of measures like opening of groceries, fair price shops, medical stores, etc at pre-notified timings so that the average public is not put to any inconvenience,” said Chandranathan.
He informed that the Meghalaya police is assisting the district administrations in maintaining public order and safety. They are fully prepared to strictly implement the lockdown.
“All the members of the police force are actively engaged in this herculean task and are also committed to assisting the state administration in its effort to supply essential goods, medical goods, and emergency services,” he said adding, “As a DGP of Meghalaya, I take this opportunity to appeal to the residents of Meghalaya to cooperate with the district administration in the in creating awareness and implementing the norms related to social distancing and hand hygiene.”

The DGP cautioned that all the individuals who violate the promulgated orders. will face stringent action under the existing laws.
He also made an appeal to youngsters, to be more responsible and take care of not only their health but also their loved ones, especially the elderly, infirm and the differently-abled.
“Emergency and medical assistance can be sought from the district control rooms, with dedicated phone numbers which have been activated in all the districts, WhatsApp number 9436337807, has also been activated to assist those individuals, students, workers who are stranded outside the state of Meghalaya. Dial 108 has been made operational, for any covid19 case or for ill health. Meghalaya Police social media account is also being used to create awareness.,” assured Chandranathan.
