Imphal: As India enters fourth day of lockdown to combat COVID-19, Manipur on Saturday dispatched five trucks of rice to Khenjol and Chakpikarong sub-divisions in Chandel district. These areas are facing shortage of food grains because of their remote location.
The trucks carrying the essential items for distribution was flagged off by youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip.
On Friday, chief minister N Biren Singh had instructed his cabinet ministers to supervise various activities and measures that have been carried out across the state during the 21 days nationwide lockdown period.
Minister Letpao was appointed to oversee government initiatives in Chandel and Tengnoupal districts.
People of these areas have been facing acute shortage of food grains and other essential items due to its remote location and lack of shops. The lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak has aggravated their problems as they cannot access their usual markets at Sugnu, Pallel and Moreh, the minister said.
Minister Letpao had appealed to officials and agencies to take utmost care in distributing the supplies to ensure that it reaches everyone.
The minister also expressed hope that timely response by the state government during the critical times will ease the life of the public to some extent.
The minister will also flag off trucks for distribution of essential items for areas of Tengnoupal district from Pallel.
