Agartala: The Tripura government has decided to defer the general election for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is scheduled to expire on May 17, for an indefinite period.
A notification issued by director, tribal welfare, govt of Tripura, N. Darlong, said the state government has decided to defer the TTAADC elections, 2020 for an indefinite period and till further notification.
“In the wake of the spread of COVID-19 epidemic throughout the country, the state government has taken numerous preventive steps like the closure of international boundaries with Bangladesh, prohibition on movement of trains/inter-state bus, the promulgation of prohibitory order under section 144 CrPc banning mass gathering, closure of cinema halls, school, colleges, swimming pool, gymnasium etc. keeping in view the importance of social distancing and isolation measure for containment of the spread of COVID-19,” the order read.
The order also said that the state government has come to the decision in exercise of power conferred under section 2 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1987, read with the Tripura Epidemic Diseases (COVID-19) Regulations, 2020 and all other enabling provisions of the disaster management act, 2005 and Section 144 of IPC.
Tripura is under lockdown since 24 March till March 31 and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has directed the state government to take measures for social distancing as a nationwide lockdown for 21 days was later announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The TTAADC comprises more than 68% of the total geographical land and is home to one-third of the population of Tripura.
The government had also unanimously passed the resolution to increase the total strength of the tribal council from the current 30 to 50 seats and also the department from 17 to 43.
