Guwahati: With a significant jump in the number of coronavirus in India on Sunday, the government has resorted to stricter safety measures like shutting down rail and Metro travels. Several states have also opted for a complete lockdown, except for essential goods and services.

Here are the major developments:

  • Total number of COVID-19 cases spiked to 396 and 3 new coronavirus deaths were reported in a single day, taking the death toll to 7.
  • All passenger train services on Indian Railways and Konkan Railway cancelled till 31 March.
  • Janata Curfew proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was observed across the country, however, in many places, people choose to gather in huge crowds during the clapping initiative, paying no heed to the request of social distancing.
  • East Khasi Hills administration of Meghalaya has decided to impose Section 144 of the CrPC in the district with effect from 10 pm of March 23 till 5 am of March 26.
  • Arunachal Pradesh government on Sunday announced that the state will be under lockdown from 5 pm on Monday till March 31 to curb the spreading of the novel coronavirus disease.
  • Delhi was placed under lockdown till March 31, shutting down public transport including metro, sealing borders and closing shops. Delhi Police has imposed prohibitory orders banning gatherings of more than four people across the city. However, essential services to remain open.
  • All non-essential establishments including schools, colleges, offices, factories etc in Chandigarh to remain closed till March 31. Public transport has also been suspended.
  • Odisha government announced a lockdown till 9 pm on March 29, in the districts of Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Kendrapara, Angul, the towns of Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Balasore, Jajpur town and Bhadrak.
  • Punjab and Rajasthan have ordered a “full shutdown” until March 31, suspending all public transport and closing malls and shops.
