Barpeta: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Barpeta police was arrested red-handed while accepting bribe by the sleuths of anti-corruption branch (ACB) recently.
Madhab Kalita, stationed at Barpeta police station, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for submitting a final report in connection with the case registered against the complainant.
According to a press note, ACB said that the complainant, Diganta Das, had approached the ACB police station in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption, Assam, to register a complaint against the accused for demanding bribe.
“Based on the complaint, a case (number 03/2020) was registered under section 7(a) of PC Act (as amended in 2018) against the accused and a trap was set-up,” said Das.
“On Wednesday evening, the ACB team led by deputy superintendent of police Aziza Gulenar arrested the accused while accepting the bribe money red handed,” the ACB said, adding, the bribe money has been seized by the team.
The ACB said, “The accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 from the complainant for submission of a final report in the case registered against him.”
“The accused public servant will be forwarded to the Special Court at Guwahati on Thursday,” it added.
The arrest comes at a time when several public servant has been arrested by ACB for demanding bribe.
Talking to EastMojo, ADGP of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Anurag Tankha, said,”We are receiving complaints of demand for illegal gratification by some public servant from various departments. We urge and request all the citizens to report such instances to the directorate in a secretive manner so that the corrupt can be booked.
