Guwahati: A suspected case of COVID-19 or coronavirus was admitted at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Assam on Tuesday. He has now been put under home isolation after his samples were collected for testing. Results will come on Wednesday evening, say sources.
The person, identified as Nazrul Islam, 48, was travelling from Mumbai to Guwahati on a SpiceJet flight. He is now at the isolation ward of GMCH. Islam reported high fever on landing at the Lokpriya Gopinath International Airport in Guwahati.
“The case had come in on Tuesday. He did show some signs. We have taken the sample for testing. We will get the results today evening. He has been put under home isolation,” a GMCH official told EastMojo.
Speaking with EastMojo, Airports Authority of India’s NER executive director Sanjeev Jindal said, “The passenger was originally coming from Dubai to Guwahati via Mumbai. On landing, he reported high fever. Our officials did the preliminary screening. After that, he was immediately handed over to the medical officers of the state health department present at the airport. He is now admitted at the GMCH.”
All passengers of the SpiceJet flight have been screened separately, the airports authority official informed.
Jindal further informed that another flier, a 15-year-old boy, Ansuman Sarma, too was transferred to the GMCH after he reported of fever and running nose. He has been released after initial testing. Sarma flew in from Delhi on Wednesday morning.
Both suspected cases were transferred through the cargo gate of the Guwahati airport to avoid exposure to other people, Jindal said.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that now even domestic air travellers would be screened at the airports across the state to prevent any case of the deadly virus.
