Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) imposed fines of over Rs 10,500 in a mass drive conducted against unauthorised and illegal shops causing inconvenience to pedestrians in Adabari area of Guwahati on Friday.
The drive started at 10.30 am from Jalukbari to Kamakhya road via Adabari, against unauthorised/unhygienic poultry shops, hotels, restaurants, fast food and illegal shops which sprung on footpaths causing inconvenience.
The drive was carried out by GMC joint commissioner Siddharthja Goswami, collector Pallavi Kachari, others from the department along with officials of veterinary branch, health branch and Guwahati City Police.
Enforcement branch of GMC imposed fines of Rs 10,500 on 57 shops out of which two shops were demolished. 20 shops were evicted from Jalukbari point to Adabari, 17 from Adabari main road and 19 shops from Kamakhya main road.
The veterinary branch team imposed fines of Rs 4,500 on 16 fish shops, 7 pig shops and 16 shops selling chicken.
The health branch imposed peanlty to the tune of Rs 6,500 on 15 hotels, fast food joints and restaurants in Adabari area.
To decongest sidewalks across the city, such drives will be conducted for the next seven days starting Monday across the city.
