Imphal: Amid the scare of coronavirus pandemic, Manipur governor Najma Heptulla on Thursday ordered the state government to close all educational institutions, including government-run schools, government-aided schools and private-run schools across the state till March 31.
“To ensure the reduction of mass gatherings and to avoid the spread of COVID-19 novel coronavirus disease, the Governor of Manipur ordered that all schools both state-run and private-run institutes located within Manipur state shall remain closed with immediate effect till March 31,” the governor said in a circular.
The decision also comes as a precautionary measure after the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday declared novel coronavirus a pandemic.
All examinations which have already been scheduled, both theory and practical, and conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) and Council of Higher Secondary Schools (COHSEM) will not be affected, though, the circular said.
The governor also requested all deputy commissioners and zonal educational officers (ZEOs) to ensure compliance of the order by all stakeholders concerned.
Earlier, the state government had sealed the international boundary gates and banned the movement of people across the 393-km-long border with Myanmar as a precautionary measure to prevent the possible spread of coronavirus.
Over 400 people in the state have been kept under observation; however, no positive case of the infection has been reported so far.
The helpline number for COVID-19 in the state is 3852411668.
The COVID-19 pandemic which was first noticed in China’s Wuhan city has already spread worldwide, affecting over 110,000 people and resulting in more than 4,000 deaths.
