Guwahati: The Congress and AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) on Tuesday announced that it will field senior journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan as its common Rajya Sabha candidate from Assam. The Rajya Sabha polls will be held on March 26.
Bhuyan has been nominated as he is a neutral candidate and was at the forefront of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) agitation in the state, which aligned with the parties pre-requisites for its RS nomination. According to reports, AIUDF-Congress had decided that the common RS candidate will be from a non-political background and someone who is actively vocal against the new citizenship law.
“We have risen above the interest of the party, keeping the interest of the state we have decided on Bhuyan,” Cong-AIUDF announced at the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Assam has seven Rajya Sabha seats of which elections are taking place for three seats. With a strong number of 86 legislators out of the 126 member assembly, BJP-AGP-BPF is expecting to win 2 seats, while Congress and AIUDF together have 37 MLAs, and they are eyeing the third seat which they can bag only with a common candidate, and a mutual consensus of all its legislators.
