Fresh execution date issued by Delhi court after govt says that the 4 convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case have exhausted all their legal remedies
New Delhi: A fresh death warrant was issued against the four convicts of the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case by a Delhi court on Thursday.
The order by the court states that all four convicts are to be hanged on March 20 at 5.30 am. This is the fourth death warrant issued by a Delhi court.
The development comes after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy petition of Pawan Gupta -- one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya case.
The execution date was fixed by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana after the Delhi government told the court that the convicts have exhausted all their legal remedies.
The court had earlier fixed March 3 for the hanging of the four convicts -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta. However, it was deferred for the third time in six weeks by a court in after convict Pawan Gupta filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court, which was rejected then and there.
Nirbhaya, the 23-year-old medical student, was brutally gangraped by six men -- including the four convicts and a juvenile -- on December 16 in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died a fortnight later at a hospital in Singapore.
