Khonsa: The Tirap Police on Tuesday arrested two people for allegedly running an extortion racket in Khonsa township and villages in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh for some time.
They were arrested on the basis of information provided by Karim Khan alias Kalu who was caught on Monday in the Khonsa police station case number 10/2020 under sections 384/506 of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The two accused were identified as 24-year-old Ibrahim Ali from Khelmati in Assam’s Lakhimpur district and 32-year-old Juphan Ketok of village Kheti in Khonsa district. The former was working a mechanic in the 2 Miles area and the latter as a casual labourer in the Khonsa PHED office.
Tirap SP Kardak Riba lauded the team headed by Officer-in-Charge W Kamhua and the people of the district for constant cooperation in nabbing the extortionists as well as drug-peddlers.
The SP appealed the people of Khonsa township in particular and the district as a whole for more cooperation in the days to come to restore peace in the region.
The police had on Monday arrested Khan for allegedly posing as a member of the extremist National Socialist Council of Nagaland and extorting government officers, traders and common people in the district. He is a resident of Lekhapani in Assam.
Khan allegedly made life-threatening calls from unknown numbers to people and demanded lakhs of rupees. The police followed a series of complaints and intelligence inputs to catch him from the Town Middle School area of Khonsa.
An extorted amount of Rs 20,900, traces of suspected brown sugar or heroin, a machete, three mobile phones along with 5 SIM cards used for demanding extortion money, etc., were recovered from the accused.
Police records said Khan had a few cases registered against him at the Itanagar and Khonsa police stations and was facing trials for the same in different courts.
