Tinsukia: One person has been arrested for his involvement in extortion demands from businessmen and government officials in Arunachal’s Khonsa and Laju town.
Md Karim Khan alias Kalu, a resident of Lekhapani in Assam, was arrested at a police check post in Khonsa town in Tirap district on Monday.
Speaking with EastMojo, Tirap SP Kardak Riba said: “Based on an input, we laid a trap and arrested Khan while he was on his way to collect random from a businessman in Khonsa. The accused was involved in rampant extortion in the name of National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) and businessmen and government officials were his main target.”
“We have recovered extortion money amounting to Rs 20,900, traces of suspected brown sugar and heroin, machetes, three mobile phones with five SIM cards, mobile chargers and an Aadhaar card,” Kiba said, adding, “The SIM cards were used in making extortion calls.”
“Although he claims to be a linkman of NSCN, we are yet to establish his claims,” added Kiba.
Khonsa police have registered a case under Section 384/506 IPC r/w sec 10/13 of UA(P) Act 1967. “As per records, Khan is also an accused in Itanagar police station case number 281/2018 under section 380/454 IPC and Khonsa police station case number 50/2013 under section 427/324/506/34 IPC,” said Kiba.
Kiba added that the accused has been produced before court and sent to three days’ police custody.
