Shillong: Even though the situation is limping back to normalcy in most parts of capital Shillong, Sohra and Shella — the areas impacted the most by the breakdown of law and order in Meghalaya in the past few days — mobile Internet services were suspended for another 48 hours.

Earlier, mobile Internet services were suspended in six districts of Meghalaya — East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts — since 10 pm on Friday following violence in Ichamati in East Khasi Hills district in which one person was killed. SMS services of all mobile service providers were also limited to only five SMS per day.

With the new announcement, Internet services will remain suspended till 10 pm on Tuesday, or untill further notice.

Meanwhile, curfew has been re-imposed in some parts of Shillong even though the situation is limping back to normalcy. There have been no fresh incidents of violence, as per reports.

Several NGOs have called for a bandh in Garo Hills to protest against the recent incidents of violence in the state. The chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, John F Kharshiing, also requested the government for timely announcement of curfew through mobile SMS or other means of communication so that there is no confusion among the public, especially owing to the ongoing school exams.

In a letter to CM Conrad K Sangma, Kharshiing also said that the federation condemned all those involved in the violence and urged the government to punish those who have taken the law into their own hands and to restore law and order in the state.
