Imphal: Manipur University, the lone central university in the state, on Monday kicked off the 24th edition of its annual ‘MUFEST 2020’ festival at the hockey grounds of the institution campus.
The festival, which got underway on Monday, will feature various activities, including sports, literary week and musical concerts, among others, while promoting a sense of peace and harmony.
The inaugural event saw 19 contingents participating at the march past.
The week-long festival under the theme ‘promoting our culture and sports’ is being organised by the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) and will conclude on March 7 this year.
As many as 41 departments of the university are participating in the annual fest which is a platform for students to showcase their talents and skills beyond their classroom activities.
Speaking at the inaugural event, Manipur University administrator Jarnail Singh urged the students to participate in the fest with utmost interest and recreate the cultural activities through the event.
MUSU, the apex students’ body of the university, was abolished in 2009 following an incident, which was much against the will of the students, leading to intense agitations. However, after a gap of five years, the students’ union was revived in 2014 with Sarangthem David as the president.
“We are celebrating this annual fest to promote our culture and sports. On the first day, we collected the sacred fire from the historic Kangla Fort during a torch rally and marked the beginning of the fest,” said MUSU president Moirangthem Bobby.
When asked about the absence of vice-chancellor (VC) following the sacking of Adya Prasad Pandey from the post last month, the student leader said, “We are expecting a regular vice-chancellor of the university in the next couple of months. But it should be an initiative from the ministry of human resource and development (HRD). And it takes time in appointing a regular VC.”
AP Pandey was removed from the position by the Centre based on his non-performance and administrative irregularities.
“The President of India, on consideration of facts and materials available on record and reply submitted by Prof Adya Prasad Pandey… in exercise of the power conferred upon him in terms of sections 13 of Manipur University Act, 2005, has been placed to dismiss Prof Adya Prasad Pandey from his post with immediate effect,” an order issued on February 21 read.
