Imphal: Former Chandel Autonomous District Council (ADC) ‘chairman’ Lhukhosei Zou alias Shesei Zou, who went missing last year after he was found to be allegedly involved in a multi-crore drug trade case, surrendered before the court on Friday.
The 51-year-old former ADC leader was arrested along with seven other associates, including his PRO, in connection with illegal possession of drug worth Rs 27 crore in the international market by a team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and Imphal West district police on June 19, 2018. Later, a chargesheet was filed against Zou on December 15. However, he was granted interim bail on December 19 on medical grounds.
Ironically, in less than a month after the special court granted him interim bail, Zou, who hails from Chandel’s Phaicham Veng, Moreh ward no 2, went missing and remained untraceable since January 8, 2019. Accordingly, the state declared him as an absconder in the multi-crore drug seizure case.
On Friday, following his appearance in court, the counsel prayed for allowing him to defend himself in the ongoing case against him and seven others.
As per reports, his counsel explained to the special court that his client (Zou) was abducted by KNA Eastern Zalengngam (Burma) and was detained in Myanmar since then.
The counsel also explained that Zou had no intention of absconding from the proceeding of the case and is willing to face the trial with good faith, reports said.
On Saturday, the alleged politician-turned-drug kingpin was brought to the special court and will remain under judicial custody for further interrogation, reports added.
It may be recalled that in June 2018, acting on a specific information a combined team of NAB and state police raided Zou’s official residence and recovered a huge quantity of heroin of 4.595 kg and World is Yours (WIY) tablets worth Rs 27 crore and Rs 57,18,000 in cash, including demonetised notes.
The former ADC chairman was elected on a Congress ticket but later joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was elected as the chairman of the Autonomous District Council of Chandel district.
