Shillong: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Thursday met to discuss names for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. In order to be able to come to a consensus, the coalition partners have constituted a sub-committee and will sit on Monday to be able to come up with a name.

While addressing the media, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that there was a detailed discussion that took place and opinions were taken from all the coalition partners. And decided that whatever the case maybe the MDA will be united and will have only one candidate.

“In order to facilitate this a small sub-committee, has been formed under the chairmanship of our deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong. Other members including the president of the UDP the PP leader from the PDF, the NCP, Independent, BJP and the HSPDP are part of this,” said Sangma.

Informing that accordingly the different political parties will have their individual meetings in the next two to three days, then the sub-committee will sit on Monday and take the discussion forward.

“We’re hopeful that by Monday we will be able to come up with the name of a candidate for the coming Rajya Sabha elections,” said Sangma.

When asked if WR Kharlukhi was one of the candidates, he said, “As I said that it is not appropriate for me to take any names right now but yes some names came up. Different different names were discussed, different parties gave their opinions and I think this reflects the kind of participatory democracy and participatory coalition governor’s that we have, where we ensure that every voice is heard. A unanimous decision will be made to select a candidate for the Rajya Sabha election.”

The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat will be held on March 26 along with the other 54 seats to be vacant across 17 states. The term of the present Rajya Sabha Congress MP, Wansuk Syiem will end on April 12.
