Political differences emerge among NDFB groups despite unification

Guwahati: Amidst rapid political developments in Bodoland ahead of the scheduled Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) elections, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Progressive) leader Govindo Basumatary on Tuesday revealed that political differences are emerging among the four factions of the NDFB soon after signing the Bodo peace accord.

Speaking with EastMojo, on the sidelines of a political meeting of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in Baksa district, Basumatary revealed that all the four factions of NDFB sat on at least four rounds of talks before signing the peace accord but few groups seem to have set their inclination more towards the ruling Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

“Before and while the signing of the accord, all factions of NDFB unanimously decided to fight against corruption activities carried out by BPF in past seven years but, now, it seems that something different is happening to what we committed,” Basumatary said.

Basumatary, however, informed that NDFB (P) had been working along with All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) in the past and even now, it will support the major opponent, UPPL, in upcoming BTC elections.

“Both ABSU and NDFB unitedly gave birth to UPPL party three years back and so NDFB (P) is committed to going for BTC elections with UPPL support,” Basumatary said.

Significantly, recently on February 22 this year, former ABSU president Promod Boro formally joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) at a two-day-long convention of the party in Chirang district of Assam. The party is being deemed as a major opponent for the ruling BPF, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming BTC elections.
