Guwahati: Sharjeel Imam, the former JNU scholar and one of the main protest organisers of Shaheen Bagh who is being interrogated on sedition charges by Assam police crime branch, was in touch with All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) leader Badruddin Ajmal and several others from the state.
Speaking to media persons, state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Preliminary information available with us has indicated that Sharjeel Imam has met AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. He was in touch with few other people of the state also.”
However, the minister said: “Being in touch is not in itself a crime. You have to know the content of the discussion. So, until and unless you do not know about the content of the discussion it is very difficult to give any comment. So we should not speculate something big at this stage, let the investigation take place.”
On Monday, Assam Police crime branch got extended custody of four days against Imam. The crime branch sought for another 10 days’ custody for further interrogation but the Kamrup (M) Chief Judicial Magistrate court granted only four days.
Imam allegedly sounded “cut off Assam” slogan in one of the anti-CAA protests, and is currently lodged at the central jail in Guwahati. He is likely to be produced at Guwahati CJM court for his third hearing on February 28.
He was brought to Guwahati from New Delhi on February 20 and taken to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital before being produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (M). Assam crime branch sought 14 days’ custody, but they were given four.
