Head constable killed, Shahdara DCP hospitalised; Section 144 imposed in violence-affected areas of northeast Delhi, particularly Jaffrabad and Maujpur
New Delhi: The head constable of Delhi Police Ratan Lal was killed during anti-citizenship amendment act (CAA) protests in northeast Delhi on Monday.
When pro- and anti-CAA agitators started pelting stones at each other, and torched at least two houses in Jaffrabad and Maujpur, Lal, who worked in ACP Gokalpuri’s office, was deployed to control the tension.
According to reports, DCP of Shahdara who was injured in the clashes has also been hospitalised. Further, section 144 has been imposed in the violence-affected areas of Northeast districts of Delhi.
This is the second day of protests in New Delhi ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit to the national capital on Tuesday as a part of his two-day visit to India.
To defuse the situations, Delhi Police has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.
Meanwhile, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in. I sincerely urge Hon’ble LG n Hon'ble Union Home Minister to restore law and order n ensure that peace and harmony is maintained. Nobody should be allowed to orchestrate flagrations."
To which, LG Anil Baijal replied, "Instructed @DelhiPolice and @CPDelhi to ensure that law and order is maintained in North East Delhi. The situation is being closely monitored. I urge everyone to exercise restraint for maintenance of peace and harmony."
