Guwahati: Sharjeel Imam, who is being interrogated by Assam Police on charges of sedition for his alleged “cut off Assam from rest of India” statement at Shaheen Bagh, has revealed that he had visited Assam earlier and was in touch with a Guwahati-based professor.
Sharjeel further said that he had maintained communications with the professor from Gauhati University since his visit to the state in 2016 and he was also in touch with a journalist who hails from Jorhat and is working in Delhi, Assam police sources said.
The sources further said that Sharjeel has shared names of people who tried to instigate violence during the anti-CAA protests in Assam in December last year.
Police is likely to seek an extension for his remand. Police had earlier sought 14 days’ custody but court granted four days.
The former JNU student is being interrogated by Assam Police in Guwahati. He was brought to the city on Thursday night and has been remanded to four days’ police custody. Saturday was day two of interrogation. Police are trying to find out why Sharjeel had made the seditious statement.
Assam government had registered a case against Sharjeel after verifying the authenticity of the audio-clip that had the seditious statement of Sharjeel at the anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh in New Delhi.
