New Delhi: Nagaland girl Upasna Gurung was on Friday crowned the first Miss Sake India 2020 at an event held in New Delhi. The 25-year-old beauty queen was chosen from among 14 finalists shortlisted from a total of 35 applicants.
According to reports, Miss Sake is held to spread the charm of Japanese rice wine. Besides Japan, India now joins the list of six nations — the others being Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia and Vietnam — where Miss Sake contests are organised.
“Currently, I am enjoying the moment, and yes, it’s a big responsibility which I have to look after from now as I will be representing India through this platform,” Gurung was quoted as saying by Kyodo News.
The participants were judged by a panel of six people from different sectors, along with Miss Sake Japan 2019 Sae Haruta.
Sake, also spelled saké and often referred to as Japanese rice wine, is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the bran. It is the national beverage of Japan and is gaining popularity in many other nations including India.
