Guwahati: Former All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) president Pramod Boro formally joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) at the two-day long convention of the party in Chirang district of Assam on Friday.
The UPPL is led by former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma, who earlier made a call to Boro to join the party. Boro was appointed the working president of the party soon after his joining.
The fresh inductions in the party also witnessed joining of some former ABSU member. The UPPL is being deemed as a major opponent for the ruling Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Earlier, attending a welcome ceremony held at Dimakuchi in Udalguri district on Thursday, the former president of the ABSU had said that a crucial political decision could be taken in the grand convention of the UPPL in Bijni regarding participation in the ensuing BTC election.
The 44-year-old Boro, a resident of Souraguri Tamulpur in Baksa district, led ABSU for over 10 years, the highpoint of which was the key role played by the organisation in the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord on January 27 for lasting peace in the Bodo-dominated areas.
Boro’s entry into politics is expected to give a new dimension to upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election in April next year.
