Dancing the blues away, India Inc style: How Welspun CEO does it

New Delhi: In a video that has gone viral on popular social media platforms and WhatsApp, CEO & joint managing director of the $3 billion Welspun Group, Dipali Goenka, can be seen swaying energetically yet gracefully with other employees to the beats of the song Muqabla from the 2019 movie, Street Dancer.

The nearly 50-second video was recorded doing the jig at the textiles to energy group’s Vapi manufacturing unit at in Gujarat earlier in February. The 50-year-old CEO is known to encourage her staff across locations to perform a 5-minute dance routine before starting work.

“We do this as a way to stay healthy as well as to motivate employees to start their start their day on a happy and positive note,” a company official told EastMojo from the group’s corporate headquarters in Lower Parel in Mumbai.

Sharing the video on Twitter, chairman of the RPG Group, Harsh V Goenka wrote, “Rare to see a CEO dance and have fun in an office setting. That’s the way to create a happy culture. @DipaliGoenka #welspun.”

The post soon went viral with Goenka’s impromptu performance being widely hailed by the Indian Twitterati.

Twitter user Raji Swami observed, “This is lovely to see. Not only is it bringing a happy culture, it takes courage to do this, because often CEOs are reluctant as they may not be taken seriously, in work. More power to you @DipaliGoenka”

Another user, Mayur Sejpal wrote on the microblogging site, “Rare to see a CEO dance and have fun in an office setting. That’s the way to create a happy culture Dipali Goenka - CEO, welspun... @DipaliGoenka well done ma'am, you inspired a lot... #welspun.”

“Wow that’s so awesome, more CEO’s should take a leaf out of her book and end their Friday evenings at least once a month if not fortnightly wt an impromptu evening of fun wt their colleagues even for one hour. way to go @DipaliGoenka and thanks for sharing @hvgoenka,” recommended Harish Mansukhani.

User Arun Kunal even used the thread to take a dig at the slowing economy and finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman.

For her part, Goenka tweeted to her peers in India Inc., Anand Mahindra, Gautam Adani and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, “Hi @anandmahindra @gautam_adani @kiranshaw this is my #WorkPlaceHappy. What’s yours?”

Under Goenka’s stewardship, Welspun has become a global leader in home textiles. The company is the largest exporter of such products to the US from India. An alumnus of Harvard Business School, she was recognised as 16th most powerful woman in Asia and fourth in India by Forbes magazine in 2016.

Welspun India registered a 55% growth in net profitability in the October-December quarter.
