At present, IndiGo is the only airline flying passengers from Shillong to Kolkata

Shillong: In a bid to boost tourism in Meghalaya, the state government on Monday said that tenders have been floated to start the Umroi-Delhi flight, and expected work to begin by March this year.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “We have floated the tender, today or tomorrow I think there is a pre-bid meeting taking place. We have already floated the tender for it, in the pre-bid meeting the interested parties will come and discuss. We are targeting that by March it should start, so hopefully the paperwork and formalities should be completed and should be able to start the flights. Whoever gives us the best deal, we will go for it.”

At present, the only connecting flight to metro cities is operated by IndiGo from Umroi Airport in Ri Bhoi district to Kolkata. The services were started in July last year and so far it has been running smoothly. This has eased the travel for many business people, tourists and students traveling to Kolkata or via Kolkata.

According to reports, the airline is expected to operate twice a week and initially for a period of three months. The period may be extended based on the operator’s performance and demand trend.
