Shillong: The Meghalaya police on Monday arrested two persons belonging to the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) for their alleged involvement in two cases of arson in Shillong.
According to the statement issued by the police, the two arrested persons — Banshanlang Marboh, 26, and Henry Kharjahrin, 20 — were involved in setting a Maruti Gypsy and a Bolero pickup on fire on February 12 this year.
Based on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage from both the locations in Shillong, the involvement of miscreants was confirmed during the course of investigation, the statement added.
According to the police, both the accused are members of the HYC Nongthymmai circle and have confessed to their involvement in the incidents.
The police are still investigating the case and further arrests are not being ruled out.
The statement further mentioned that the involvement of HYC members in the acts of violence runs contrary to their stated objective of holding a peaceful agitation for implementation of ILP.
“Surprisingly, one of the arrested accused, Henry Kharjahrin, is the first cousin of Robertjune Kharjahrin, president of HYC. These acts have created a feeling of panic and fear among the general public and the leaders are hereby directed to refrain the members from any such unlawful activity,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, the youth council has refuted the allegations and clarified that no directions were given by it to resort to any violence.
HYC secretary Roykupar Synrem said: “The law says nobody is guilty until proven and so it will be decided in the court of law. I appeal to all our members to be patient and not resort to any violence.”
