10 yrs after foundation, this Assam village awaits concrete bridge

Guwahati: At a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led governments at the Centre and the state have assured the people of all-around infrastructural development in Assam, nothing much is being seen on ground, especially if one were to go by the locals of Goreswar in lower Assam’s Baksa district.

Residents of Dhulabari village in Goreswar are facing a tough time in commuting to nearby areas as a proposed concrete bridge over the Puthimari river is yet to become a reality. Although the foundation stone was laid by Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohillary in 2009 and work started on it soon thereafter, commuters have hardly seen any progress in the past 11 years.

Interestingly, daily commuters including school children have to pay a token money of Rs 10 to a group of people, who set up the makeshift bamboo bridge, every time they have to use it to reach nearby Rangiya in Kamrup (Rural) district.

Speaking with EastMojo, a local of Dhulabari village revealed the situation turns worst during floods as people are bound to cross the river walking through a nearby railway bridge, putting their life at risk.

Notably, locals of Dhulabari village are demanding the state government, especially the BTC authorities, to complete construction work for the concrete bridge before the scheduled council elections this year.
