New Delhi: In the first reported case of the decade, a Thai woman on board Qatar Airways gave birth to a baby boy mid-air, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Kolkata, West Bengal on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

The woman and the newborn were admitted to a private hospital after landing around 3 am. They are both reported to be safe and sound.

According to reports, the baby was delivered with the help of five cabin crew members and a doctor on board.

The flight was en route from Doha to Bangkok.

Replying to a Tweet, Qatar Airways on Twitter said, “Delighted to welcome a new member on the flight last night. We’ll be waiting for the baby’s call in 20 years time to join us in the flight deck.”

The aircraft then resumed its onward journey to Bangkok.
