Aizawl: A felicitation programme was held at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl for Padma Shri awardee Lalbiakthanga Pachuau, an eminent Mizo personality and one of the oldest practising journalists in the country.

Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai presented Pachuau with citation and a cash prize.

Speaking at the function, the governor praised the awardee for his contribution to society, not only for the state of Mizoram but for the entire nation. “We have a lot to learn from the life of Lalbiakthanga Pachuau. His lifetime achievement is a pride for the people of Mizoram as well as the media of the state,” he said.

In his speech, Pachuau said, “I am grateful and humbled to be awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India.”

Pachuau added that he was grateful to the governor for organising a felicitation programme on his behalf.

“I would like to thank all my colleagues from the Mizoram Journalist Association for their unending support. I would also like to extend my gratitude to my friends from the Association of Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD) and Mizoram Social Defence Council for their continuous support which has also helped me to achieve this status,” he said.

Pachuau was born on March 25, 1927 at Saichal village. He is a World War II veteran and has various gallantry awards to his name — World War II Medal, Burma Star, Independence Medal, J&K Medal and Sainya Seva Medal.

He has tremendous contribution for the upliftment of Mizo society and founded the Association for Voluntary Blood Donation, Mizoram in which he was the president from 2010 to 2014. He is currently the president of 2nd World War Veteran Association and Mizoram Social Defence Union.

Pachuau started his career in the field of journalism from 1980 as an editor of his newspaper Mizoram Tlangau. He was given the award for being a ‘prominet journalist’ by the Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) in April 2011.
