Tinsukia: The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) on Sunday took responsibility for the gunfight with Army’s 9 Rajputana Rifles at Wara Natun Gaon, along Assam-Arunachal border, on Saturday and claimed to have inflicted severe casualties on the Army’s side.

In a press release signed by self-styled Lt Joy Asom of the outfit’s publicity department, ULFA-I claimed severe casualties of more than four soldiers from 9 Rajputana Rifles. “No casualties on our part,” the release claimed.

ULFA-I said: “They were involved in the face-to-face firing incident that took place between the colonial security forces of (9 Rajputana Rifles) and soldiers of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), United Liberation Force of Asom at Khandu and Mungkam village located at the so-called border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.”

However, sources in the armed forces have rubbished the claims of ULFA-I calling it to be propoganda.

A source in the Army said, “There has been no casualties or injuries, whatsoever, in the armed forces, rather one militant sustained bullet injuries.”

On Saturday, an encounter was reported between 9 Rajputana Rifles of Indian Army and militants on the outskirts of Wara Natun basti, along Assam-Arunachal border, in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Security forces had claimed that the cadres belonged to National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), but with Ulfa (I) press release, the cloud of doubts behind the outfit present in the encounter has cleared.

EastMojo had reported that this route is largely used by ULFA-I.
