Guwahati: Over 100 members belonging to the Congress party’s student wing, National Students Union of India (NSUI), including its national president, Neeraj Kundan, were detained by Assam police on Saturday.

As per reports, the NSUI members were demonstrating against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the Guwahati Club locality but later marched to Raj Bhavan in order to submit a memorandum to governor Jagdish Mukhi.

At first, the security personnel present at spot restrained the student protesters from entering the governor’s residence and after they failed in handling the crowd and protesters refusing to step back, police personnel from Panbazar police station rushed in and detained all NSUI members participating at the demonstration.

Besides protesting against CAA, the NSUI members in their CAA demonstration also demanded an unconditional release of the recently arrested NSUI supporters, including state president Zubair Anam.

NSUI national president Kundan, who was detained during Saturday’s demonstration while addressing the crowd said the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the Centre and the state have crossed all their limits and in coming days they will give a proper reply to all the atrocities they have imposed on them.

“I demand the BJP government to immediately scrap this draconian law which is not only against the people but also against the constitutional structure of the country,” Kundan added.

Significantly, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday took over the custody of NSUI leader Zubair Anam from Assam police who was arrested in charges of provoking violence and involving in vandalism during anti-CAA protest in December 2019 in Guwahati.

Speaking with EastMojo, the officer in-charge of Dispur police station, Himangshu Das, informed that Zubair was nabbed on charges of vandalizing a concrete structure in front of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra at Panzabari.

“Zubair is also charged for provoking violence during anti-CAA protest at Down Town Hospital area of the city,” informed Das.

Das further revealed that two separate cases against Zubair were registered at the police station earlier, however, he was granted bail on specific reasons.

On January 31, Zubair was arrested by Dispur police from ABC locality right after he addressed a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan.
