Agartala: The Padma Shri recipient and eminent surgeon Dr Rathin Dutta breathed his last on Monday in his Kolkata residence due to old-age ailments.

Dutta, who was also the first from the state to received the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS) of the state, had served as the director of the health service and special secretary (Health) in the government of Tripura.

Dr Dutta was born in Mangadoi in Assam in 1931 and after his schooling from Shillong and later completing the MBBS studies in Dibrugarh medical college in Assam, he left for London upon clearing the FRCS.

Datta is also believed to have worked under the former West Bengal chief minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy during his initial days as a doctor.

Datta was awarded with the Padma Shri for his efforts and kind of service he provided to soldiers and Mukti Jodha during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 as a surgeon.

The chief Minister expresses deep condolences for the departed soul of Dr Rathin Datta who expired on Monday at 7 am. He was a legendary surgeon and a good administrator of Tripura health services. He, with his team, was responsible for creating medical infrastructure in Tripura. His humanitarian contribution during the tragedy of 1971 is history.

The chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb also wrote in his twitter, “Deeply grieved at the sudden demise of Padma Shri Dr. Rathin Dutta, an outstanding Doctor, known for his excellent services in the Medical care history of Tripura. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this moment of grief. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti”.

The West Tripura MP and the entire medical fraternity also expressed their condolence to the family of the departed soul.

Datta was survived by his son Rajarshi Datta, an engineer, and his daughter Sonal Dutta, both settled in the USA.
